Typical Symphony NT and DOS Questions
How do I Enable the Guest Account?
When RIPs are configured at the factury, the unattended install process does not enable the guest Account. This will cause a problem when trying to print to OpenRIP NT from a windows machine. To enable the Guest Account on OpenRIP NT , go to Start> Programs > Administrative Tools> User manager. Double-click on Guest Account in the top window. Uncheck Account disabled. Close all open Windows. The queues should now show up on your windows machine.
Why isn't OpenRIP NT Registering the HASP Key?
When builds up to 39 of OpenRIP NT (Postscript level 2), if a space was put into the directory name when installing the software (i.e. E:\Open RIP), your Key will not register with OpenRIP. The software will start but it will be the lite version. To fix this, rename the folder with a folder name with no spaces. (i.e. E:\OpenRIP).
Why isn't Mac OS 9 and OpenRIP for DOS Compatible?
We have identified an incompatibility between MacOS 9 and the DOS versions of OpenRIP. Under most circumstances, users are able to select queues from the Chooser, but printing fails with an error on the Mac. This seems to happen regardless of whether the user has selected LaserWriter 8.7, Adobe PS, or PSPrinter in the Chooser. (Note: a small minority of users have reported success printing from OS 9 to DOS RIPs, but we have not identified why they are able to print all in-house testing has shown that it does not work.) There are two solutions: downgrade your Macintosh to MacOS 8.6 or earlier, or upgrade to OpenRIP NT.
A workaround is to maintain a Mac on your network which uses a previous version of MacOS, and generate PostScript files which you can download from that Mac to the RIP. If you have a network with Macs and PCs and use inter-platform software such as DAVE or PCMacLan, you can also transfer PostScript files to PCs and download them from there. The DOS-based RIP is no longer available, and we have ceased development on it. We have no plans to address this incompatibility with a software update, though we will pass on any additional tips on getting around this problem if we receive any.
How Do I Print from Windows 95/98 to OpenRIP for DOS?
When setting up a network with Windows 95 and Windows 98 machines to print to a DOS RIP, it may be necessary to set up one or more Windows machines as a "Browse Master" in order to see the RIP. First, ensure that all network settings are correct on your Windows 95/98 machines. Next, be sure that at least one PC on the network is set as Browse Master. To set a machine as Browse Master, right-click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties. Double-click File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. (If it is not available, then you will need to Add that service first.) Select Browse Master and set the Value to Enable. Select LM Announce and set the value to Yes. Click OK twice to get out of Network Settings. You will be asked to restart the computer. Click Yes.
